A Senior’s Essential Guide to Enjoying the 4th of July

For older adults and seniors, the Fourth of July is the perfect time to pause from summer’s busyness and celebrate with loved ones.

If you plan to spend your time outdoors this year watching a parade or fireworks show, here are some tips to ensure that you have a wonderful time and feel your best:

If you would rather enjoy your time indoors (with some cool air conditioning), here are three ways you could spend your time:

  • Wear layers such as a light jacket or an extra T-shirt. This is the best way to feel comfortable in any weather.
  • Apply sunscreen and stay in the shade to protect yourself from the sun and the heat. Also, consider bringing a portable hand-held fan to help cool down.
  • Bring a water bottle to stay hydrated on the go.
  • Pack ear protection such as headphones or earplugs for parades or fireworks shows if you are sensitive to loud noises.
  • Bring a cushion or pillow to ensure comfort in your lawn chair while enjoying any outdoor activities.

  • Cooking/baking. If you will be hosting or attending any gatherings, here are some easy celebratory recipes for you to bring or enjoy yourself!
