Celebrating Senior Fitness: Orange Shoe’s Tips for Health and Wellness

National Senior Health and Fitness Day is quickly approaching on May 25th, and what better way to celebrate than by featuring Scott Michel, Partner at Orange Shoe Personal Fitness, as our guest for this post. Scott began his career at Orange Shoe after graduating from UW-LaCrosse with degrees in Exercise Sport Science, with a concentration in Strength and Conditioning, and Education.

Teaching people new skills and how to overcome limiting beliefs has been something that has fueled Scott throughout his past 20 years with Orange Shoe Personal Fitness. Scott has been with the Orange Shoe family since 2004, and when he is not helping clients as a personal trainer in Fitchburg, at the gym or running the business, he enjoys spending time with his wife and four kids in and around Madison. Scott enjoys any opportunity to create a new memory with his family and friends.

When Scott was asked about the challenges he helps older adults overcome and the importance of senior health and fitness, Scott commented, “I think a lot of our older population feel they have lost certain skills (getting down to the ground and back up again, or picking things up off the ground) and are unable to regain those skills at their current point in the life. It’s fun to see how once you’ve taught someone how to sit down and stand up out of a chair without assistance, how their perspective on other areas of their lives changes. It’s important that we show people that most of the time, it’s just a limiting belief that they can’t do something, and once they realize this, it gives them a new outlook on life.”

Scott offered this sage advice to someone that is just starting a routine exercise program, “It should also be something you look forward to, otherwise the person won’t stick with it long enough for it to be beneficial. Walking with a friend is probably the most underrated activity out there! Bodyweight strength training is another really awesome thing that will help people remain confident in their day-to-day activities.”

And finally, what does enjoy life, Capri’s tagline, mean to him? Scott said, “It’s simple, it’s creating memories with people you care about. I think when we look back at life, it’s the relationships we’ve created and the experiences we’ve shared with those relationships that really count. I work each day to find something to look forward to (it doesn’t have to be big). I think those are the things that make me enjoy life the most and help me keep things in perspective.”

It’s a pleasure to partner with Scott Michel and Orange Shoe Personal Fitness at select Capri Communities, where he leads weekly fitness classes for residents of all ages and activity levels.
