During this unprecedented time, keeping our seniors safe has resulted in limited engagement. We want to ensure our residents remain healthy both physically AND mentally. Though we can’t allow visitors, here are 5 ways you can still help our residents stay happy and connected.
#1. Virtually connect
Via video chats, emails, texts and social media.
Using Facetime, Skype or another video calling platform is a personal way to supplement a visit. Make time to text, email or connect over social media as well – and don’t forget to send pictures and videos. If you have kids, get them involved! Residents love to see what you have been up to! Not all residents have a device to chat with; consider donating one. Our staff would be happy to show them how to use it.
#2. Pick up the phone
Talking on the phone is a tried-and-true way of communicating. It’s always reassuring to hear someone’s voice, especially during uncertain times. It’s okay to talk about concerns but be sure to share good news too! Your positive attitude will help our residents adjust to this new way of living and calm any fears they may have.
#3. Send a care package
Consider ordering a gift online. Even better? Make one yourself! Whether you know a resident or just want to help, care packages are a wonderful way to remind our residents that they are loved.
Here are some gift ideas:
- An activity a resident can do by themselves (think sudoku, crossword puzzles, a craft kit or a “learn calligraphy kit”)
- Jigsaw puzzles and board games
- A photo album or scrapbook
- An electronic photo frame loaded with pictures
- Cozy slippers or blankets
- Books or magazines
- A personalized calendar
- Flowers
- Headphones for residents to listen to music, audio books or TV shows
#4. Write a letter or get crafty
It may seem old-fashioned, but a hand-written letter is a very touching way to communicate with our residents. Add a printed photo with the letter for another personal touch. Not everyone will receive a letter during this time, so consider writing extra.
Have your kids home from school created chaos and boredom? Let’s find a winning solution. We’d love to tap the time and talent of kids. Consider asking them to write a letter, make a card or paint a picture – the more the better! This small gesture will make a big impact.
